Drum percussion instruments

Drum percussion instruments

instruments of indefinite pitch of membranephon family.

Has the form of a cylinder covered with one or two sides leather or plastic wrap with metal hoops, on which there are screws that regulate the pitch. Drum performs timbre and rhythm features.

1. Small drum — small in size tool (from 13 to18 cmin height with a diameter of35 cm) with metal housing of chrome or nickel plated brass. The sound of small drum is a high, timbre is dry and abrupt.

Along the bottom of the membrane there are the strings (18 or less), which makes the instrument sound tinny and crackly specific hue.

On the small drum one can play either with the strings or strings, which is achieved by switching the lever located on the tool body.

In playing on small drum without strings the sound is more muffled and weak. Small drum has also mute — a special device located on the tool body, when turn it to the top of the inside membrane, a soft rubber pad is pressed which mutes the sound.

The small drum stands on the horizontally rack and one can play with light wooden sticks with small heads up to38 cm(they are made of rosewood or ebony), and of metallic panicles made of thin steel wire. Small drum is one of the leading percussion in jazz.

It is used to emphasize the rhythmic canvas works as well as to perform solo episodes, often reaching great rhythmic complexity.

Jazz artists who played on percussion extraordinarily enriched techniques of playing on the small drum, such as the alternation of single and double strokes, tremolo, sticks’ strikes on the edge of the rim and the skin at the same time, blows one stick to another, pressed to the skin, muted impact, when the skin is pressed against his hand, another stick or a whisk. Also — reusable strikes the same stick; blows with sticks on the edge of the rim, playing with panicles and a stick; panicles game — hitting, rubbing the skin by rotational movements, muted or open blows, blows a whisk, while the other is spinning, etc.

2. Big drum is large sized instrument (from 35 to40 cmin height with a diameter of 50-60 cm) with a powerful low and muffled sound.

There are two varieties — one-sided and two-sided. Big drum has a mute — a special device located on the tool body, when turn it to the top of the inside membrane, a soft rubber pad is pressed; resulting is the sound is very short and dry.

On the big drum established vertically, drummer accents basic rhythm with help of the mallet with a spherical soft tip made of felt or rubber.

It is attached to the pedal, which is activated with the right foot. Thanks to such adaptation, performer makes his hands free to play on the other instruments.

In modern jazz big drum is used to emphasize certain accents. In the drum kit is sometimes used two large drums.
